updated. so what's everyone's take on the lyrics? let's get the elephant out of the way, the devil/satan references. i wonder if religious people are put off by the "white sedan" in ghost malls lol.

Hahaha, I really hope that nobody is put off by that stuff! It really does sound like "white sedan" though lmao.
As far as Brian's spiritual/religion themed lyrics go, I feel like it's the least of what people should be put off by in the music biz these days. The same people who get offended by Satan references in a Weatherbox song probably bump Weezy and rap along with him about purposely busting into a girl's eye. Not that there's anything really wrong with that...as long as you can recognize it as just some stupid funny hip hop that is. Hmm, I don't remember where I was going with this.
HEY BRIAN MORE SATAN ON THE NEXT RECORD PLZ!

I'm currently putting together my full thoughts on the lyrics of this beast. It's so dense that it's hard for me to really get my mind around it fully, something new pops into my brain every time I read through them. In the meantime, I'll re-post some stuff I wrote on AP about the satan/devil stuff.
"I may be grasping at straws here, but in Radio Hive when Brian says he wants to write the "anti-hymn," I have to wonder if that's what Microcosm ended up being."
"Brian said in that Trippin'-in-depth post that he had been accused of being a devil worshipper by a few people and he thought it was crazy, or something. I sometimes wonder if he talks about the devil so much to kinda get that rise out of people, or in (self-)parody. Haha. Definitely sure there's more than that to it, haha, just something I've wondered.
Also, couple other throwbacks I noticed:
'In the process of clearing cobwebs, I crossed a mighty line. I map-maker, space-time shaker..' - 'I have cobwebs for maps, I'm walking in circles again.' 'Holy bright'- used in Devil and Whom and Ask My Flashlight. 'Two bags of Light back again in an empire town'- definitely brings to mind Two Satchels Of Light. Also, 'an empire town' could be a reference to No Hands maybe. 'You can't make art in a vacuum state, or become something great alone.' - 'I'm alone in the vastness, hollow vacuum; I take my chances.' "
Just to get the discussion going. I definitely do think there's more to the satan/devil references though, just think he uses those partly because it invokes such a strong reaction in people.

The way I interpret the devil/religious metaphors are as an extension of the themes of dark/light and good/bad which crop up his lyrics a whole lot. I love the lyrics on the album so much it feel like they are paying homage to all the box songs that have come before them but in an evolved state I dunno.

i def agree with you guys on the whole devil thing. it seems that since brian isn't exactly the religious type, he has no problems with using the devil in his work. this album has 10/10 lyrics, i just love how brian has created a sort of weather jargon. just mention maps, compass, empires, bad, mad, light, devil etc and we immediately think box.

Totally agree there. It makes it such a rewarding experience listening to the songs. I wonder if you could make a weather dictionary of all the weather jargon? Brian should get on it haha

Those are cool lists, thought of some more but as you say some them are probably pushing it! Clouds, mountains, magic, dirt/earth, bomb/bombs, good/nice, strings/stretch, cops/police/sirens. It would be a cool thing to incorporate in the zine for sure, I actually submitted a couple of Weatherbox inspired drawings that I did a while ago to it but haven't heard back. They're nothing special but I would be chuffed if they get used!
*also beasts and guns!
